Werkhof Allschwil

Year: 2026
Status: Selective Competition
Client: Gemeinde Allschwil
Location: Allschwil, Switzerland
Gross floor area: 3.500 sqm

The renovation of the municipal depot in Allschwil is creating a new public hub that combines urban infrastructure, childcare, and inclusive community life. On the upper floor, the space freed up through optimized use will house a daycare center and an integration center, offering flexible learning and gathering spaces. The newly designed urban balcony connects indoor and outdoor areas, opens up a spacious terrace for play, relaxation, and informal interaction, and establishes a direct line of sight and movement between the public park, the neighborhood, and the interior spaces. The cafeteria, located next to the park, serves as the heart of the building, offering views of the greenery and reinforcing its public character. On the formerly closed west facade facing Pastorenweg, a series of large-scale glass and sliding elements creates an inviting gesture, provides transparency, and facilitates the transition from the neighborhood, playground, and maintenance yard to an open house for everyone. It also invites the neighborhood’s residents to network, relax, and initiate community activities in the public space.
1.) The workshops will remain in place. Storage areas will be directly connected and optimized by up to 50 percent. Short distances and clear assignments will increase efficiency, clarity, and logistical performance in day-to-day operations.
2.) The office spaces are concentrated in the center, facing the courtyard. Generous glazing creates a cockpit-like atmosphere with a direct view of the courtyard and a continuous connection to the work environment.
3.) The redevelopment will create space for a daycare center, a neighborhood community center, and integration programs. Flexible structures allow for a variety of uses and strengthen the neighborhood as a social and communal gathering place.

4.) The maintenance yard and third-party uses will have separate entrances. Two external access routes and a new elevator will ensure independent pedestrian traffic flows and allow the different uses to coexist without disruption.
5.) The post-and-beam elements from the demolished rotunda will be reused. Facade openings facing east and west create an open structure that offers a pleasant environment for visitors.
6.) Along the south side, a space-defining layer of balconies is being constructed from reused steel. It provides access and expands the active areas, serving as a play area and a versatile outdoor space.
